Winding Mechanism of RmF Coils

RF Coils or Radiofrequency coils are basically micro-coils that have a core and the ultra-fine wire around the core. The preparation of RF micro-coils involves the winding mechanism in order to wind the ultra-fine wire around a core. These coils have great applications in the electronics and medical sectors.

Applications of RF Coils:

Different industries use RF coils for different applications. However, the major applications of RF coils are in the medical sector. In order to prepare the Magnetic Resonance Imaging or MRI machines, RF coils play an essential role. In MRI machines, RF coils help to transmit and receive signals.

Characteristics of RF Coils:

The major characteristics of RF coils are-
i) The winding mechanism of RF coils winds a protected wire around a core. This insulated wire helps to produce a magnetic field around the coil.
ii) The magnetic field acts as a bar magnet around the coil with a south and north pole. RF coils have different shapes to fulfill different purposes.
iii) In order to upsurge the intensity of the magnetic field, the winding mechanism of RFcoils adds extra layers of wire around the core.

Winding Mechanism of RF Coils:

The winding mechanism of RF coils involves the following steps such as-

i) Initially, simulation and modeling tools are employed to prepare the design of the RF coils. In the case of manufacturing of the RF coils in order to place in MRI machines, initial design plays a vital role for the miniaturized size. In order to design the RF coils, many manufacturers use COMSOL Multiphysics of Sweden. An iterative approach is effective for the Orthocyclic winding process due to the requirement of space. The most essential part of the design is the calculation for space. Therefore, a manufacturer needs to evaluate the necessary number of windings, the wire’s cross-sectional area, and the highest available space for the core.

ii) After the design, the manufacturers need to determine the type of the core. On the basis of a device’s operating frequency, the material of the core differs. There are several other factors that influence the choice of the material for a core. For instance, due to effective usability, many manufacturers use powdered iron or ferrite cores.

iii) The third step is about the winding mechanism when an insulated copper ultra-fine wire is twisted around a spherical or helix core. The manufacturers decide the required number of turns on the basis of the characteristics of the core material and the purpose of the inductance. In order to provide larger inductance, a higher number of turns is required. Orthocyclic winding machines are mostly used in modern industries to prepare the RF coils as these machines can place the upper-level wires into the channels of lower-level wires.  Above all, the coating process and quality of the copper wire play a significant role in the manufacturing of RF coils.

iv) Finally, the manufacturers need to check the quality of the RF micro-coils for their validation.
