How to get more active this summer

As the days get longer in the run-up to the summer solstice, now is the perfect time to start getting active. It won’t just benefit you physically, but it can also have a profound impact on your mental health by reducing stress and helping you sleep better.

If you’re looking to get more active this summer but don’t know where to begin, we’ve got some simple tips to get you off the couch and enjoying the great outdoors.

Set a goal

Whether it’s hitting a step goal, trying a new sport, pushing for a PB at the squat rack or finally completing a 5k run, setting yourself a goal can help you push yourself to achieve more.

When setting your new fitness goal, get as specific as possible and make it measurable. In order to not feel demoralized, break your goal down into small, achievable chunks. This way you can gradually work towards a bigger target and see the incremental progress you are making, helping you stay on track.

Do it with friends

Ditch the after-work drinks and instead head out for an afternoon walk with friends. Inviting your friends along on a specific day every week will help you keep on track. If you only invite two or three people you’ll be less inclined to cancel your plans. Having someone hold you to account will help you stick to your activities too.

The lighter nights and warm, dry weather will help turn it into a habit, so you won’t want to break your walking streak come winter!

Invest in equipment

You don’t need a pricey gym membership to get fit. Look at how much you’d spend on a gym membership and use that monthly sum to invest in some equipment. You don’t need top-of-the-range stuff, but working out your budget will help you decide what you can afford.

A resistance band and a selection of light, medium, and heavy weights can provide you with a great workout. If it’s affordable, you could also invest in a machine like a bike or rower.

Enjoy the great outdoors

Work up a sweat before enjoying a summer BBQ and head to a local beauty spot. The UK has a plethora of natural beauty spots that are ideal for summer hikes the whole family can enjoy.

Whether you enjoy rugged landscapes or golden beaches, plan to get out and about at least once a month and be amazed at all the flora and fauna that come alive during the summer. You may even get to enjoy a wild strawberry or 10!Â
